Children: ‘Their Pet, Their Responsibility’

home-picture1

Understanding responsibility is a large step in a childs life. Giving them responsibility allows them to go a step further in their development.

Responsipet works towards the national curriculum to help  children understand the needs of animals, and enable them to become responsible for their own pets at home.

As well as basic animal needs such as nutrition, handling animals and animal behaviour, children will learn how to perform health checks and understand vaccinations and animal illnesses.

School Workshops For Children:

ResponsiPet provides basic responsible pet ownership workshops for children aged 7 to 14 years. Our main workshop lasts for 1 ½ – 2 hours but can be reduced or extended if required. It lightly covers the basics in pet care including the following topics:

•    Basic animal needs.
•    Environmental enrichment with a craft activity, if time allows.
•    Animal cruelty and the law.
•    A health check performed on a cat, dog or guinea pig. If for any reason you cannot have an animal on the premises, an alternative can be provided.
•    Vets and vaccinations.
•    Animal organisations.

Throughout the session, children will be encouraged to participate by hands on activities such as performing a health check on the animal, making crafts and group work.

The course adheres to the national curriculum. For details click here.

Other more detailed workshops focusing on specific areas:

•    Environmental enrichment: Keeping my pet happy: This is a one hour session that demonstrates to children how they can keep their pet happy by providing the correct stimulation and therefore keep it happy and healthy. The children will be involved in discussions about how different animals differ in their stimili needs both in captivity and in the wild. They will then make their own toy or activity to take home with them for their pet to demonstrate it being environmentally fullfilled.

•    My pet’s diet and health care: (cats, dogs, small mammals). This one and a half hour session touches on the importance of correct nutrition  for a childs pet and recognising ill health. They will learn what foods these animals need and in what quantity. They will be shown how to do a health check to enable them to see if their pet is in good health and have a light discussion about common pet illnesses.

  • Pet First Aid: This one and a half hour workshop covers what to do in the event of an emergency and how to deal with burns, cuts, poisoning and how to perform CPR. Please note however, CPR is a serious matter and we can only offer this class to children aged 11 and over for health and safety reasons.

In order for the children to gain the best learning experience, these workshops are limited to 15 children per workshop. Workshops can be repeated at an extra but reduced cost for subsequent groups on the same day.

Cost Per Workshop: £45 (that’s just £3.00 per pupil)

ParentsIf you can get ten children interested in doing one of our courses in your area then we will book a location nearby and come and do either one or all of the above mentioned workshops. The parent who calls and books it, gets their child to attend for FREE!
